HISTORY OF THE BRUDENELL
The name Brudenell comes from the family of James Thomas Brudenell, the Earl of Cardigan, who owned Kirkstall Abbey after it ceased to be a monastery in 1539. This connection explains why many roads in the Hyde Park area of Leeds are named Cardigan and Brudenell, giving the Brudenell Social Club its name.
The Brudenell Social and Recreational Club was formed on December 8th, 1913. It acquired its first premises and the current land shortly afterward, where it continues to be a cornerstone of Leeds’ vibrant music scene.
